H2H ROUND-7: Flash

Flash (Olympus wins) – Both digital cameras have a small built-in flash unit that creates a hot spot in images and sometimes yields too much light in close portraits. The flashes are located in different positions, but neither placement is ideal: they are not directly above the lens and therefore shed their light unevenly in images. The Olympus FE-25 has a few flash modes available from its multi-selector: auto, auto with red-eye reduction, on, and off. All of the modes have a little pre-flash that works like a red-eye reduction system, although that didn’t prevent red eyes from disappearing in all subjects. The Nikon Coolpix L19 has all the same flash modes as the Olympus with the addition of a slow sync mode. The Nikon also adds an in-camera red-eye fix as part of the manufacturer’s standard technology suite on its digital cameras. But even this doesn’t fix every red eye; it still left red rings around the edges of previously all-red eyes: still creepy-looking in my opinion. All in all, the Nikon may have one extra flash mode and the in-camera red-eye fix technology, but the Olympus flash unit still yielded better-looking portraits when the flash was used. The Nikon flash was just too bright and unflattering.
