Focus (Olympus wins) – Both cameras employ an auto focus system that hovers over the center point of the image. The focus point cannot be changed on these digital cameras; it remains in the center at all times. The Nikon Coolpix L19’s auto focus is generally reliable, but its macro focus mode – available from the flower icon on the multi-selector – had some trouble. I used the macro modes on both cameras to take pictures of a small beetle on a blade of grass. The Nikon had the most trouble focusing and consequently most of the images came out blurry. Perhaps if you have a tripod, the L19’s macro focus would be more usable. The Olympus FE-25, in the same beetle-shooting situation, performed much better. I held the camera just as steady but the image was much more focused and sharper. The Olympus, to its credit, also has a super macro mode that allows you to get that much closer to subjects. The Olympus’ normal auto focus mode worked just as well as the Nikon’s, although it was quite a bit louder. Despite all the noise, the award for the best auto focus still goes to the Olympus FE-25 because it was more effective in rendering sharp subjects.
