H2H ROUND-5: Zoom Lens

Zoom Lens (Nikon wins) – The two budget cameras have similar lenses with the Nikon L19 reaching the farther of the two. The L19’s 3.6x optical zoom lens measures 6.7-24mm, an equivalent to 38-136mm in the 35mm format. The Olympus has a more standard 3x, 36-108mm equivalent lens that is a tiny bit wider but just doesn’t have the reach of the Nikon. The cameras have the same type of toggle on the back that allows you to thumb through the zoom range. Both lenses have a maximum aperture of f/3.1, which makes taking photos in the dark and indoors difficult. Many compact cameras have an f/2.8 aperture that is wider and lets in more light, but this shortcoming is perhaps another standard among budget-friendly cameras.

The lens on the Olympus FE-25 seems to cause lots of problems in the images themselves: there is often purple fringing around edges of subjects and a softness around the edges of the images themselves.
