Adobe released its latest version of Photoshop today with a host of new, innovative tools. New additions to Photoshop CS5 include the much-buzzed-about Content Aware Fill tool that was introduced two weeks ago as a “sneak peek” on YouTube. CS5 will retail for $699 or as an upgrade for current owners for $149. CS5 Extended, which includes 3-D tools for video, web, medical, manufacturing, and engineering industries, will retail for $999 or as an upgrade for $349.
Adobe Photoshop CS5’s new Content Aware Fill tool was spotlighted on a YouTube video that demonstrated how to easily remove trash and trees from images with a few clicks. The tool also eliminated spots of lens flare and filled in blank areas where stitched panoramas left jagged edges. According to Adobe, the tool “removes any image detail or object, examines the surroundings and seamlessly fills in the space left behind.” Watch the video here.
Other new tools include a Refine Edge tool that makes detecting and selecting edges on hair and foliage faster, Automatic Image Straightening, a Rule-of-Thirds Crop tool, a Color Picker, a Mixer Brush that blends many combinations of colors on a single paintbrush tip, a Puppet Warp tool that repositions objects and perspectives, and the ability to save 16-bit images as JPEGs.
The Extended version of Photoshop CS5 allows users to create 3-D logos and provides a library of “materials” like fabric, chrome, glass, and cork. For motion sequences, tools can manipulate multiple frames using single-key shortcuts.
“The past two decades have demonstrated an amazing interplay between customers who want to push the limits of their personal creativity and a passionate team of Adobe engineers who make those visions a reality,” said Kevin Connor, vice president of product management for professional digital imaging at Adobe, in the April 12 press release.
