Today’s announcement of the new Canon PowerShot S90 revived the defunct S-series, which has been in hibernation for nearly four years. The new S90 combines the slim lines of the Digital Elph series with the high-quality features of the pro-friendly G-series. The S90 will go on sale in October for $429.

The Canon PowerShot S90 has the same 10-megapixel image sensor that is included on the freshly announced G11. The two cameras incorporate a High Sensitivity System that claims to improve low light performance by up to two stops, according to Canon’s Aug. 19 press release. The new camera has a low light mode that allows photographers to snap 2.4 pictures per second with the high ISO sensitivity of up to 12800, but at a reduced resolution of 2.5 megapixels. The S90 can take its low light performance even further with its 3.8x optical zoom lens that has a wide f/2.0 aperture.

The 28-105mm lens includes optical image stabilization and has apertures selectable to a max of f/2.0 at the widest and f/4.9 when fully zoomed. The new digital camera, which has a slogan of “cutting-edge technology yields to old school feel” on the Canon web site, has a control ring around its lens that allows users to zoom to 28mm, 35mm, 50mm, 85mm, and 105mm steps.

The control ring is customizable, as are many features on the new Canon S90. There is a full range of manual and automated exposure modes along with perks like RAW + JPEG shooting and ISO sensitivity of 3200 at full resolution.

The Canon PowerShot S90 has a 3-inch LCD screen that has 461,000 pixels. The camera is a far cry from the last S-series camera on the market – the S80 that debuted in 2005. The old S80 has 8 megapixels, a 2.5-inch LCD screen, and a 3.6x optical zoom lens with a standard f/2.8 aperture. It sold for about $500 in its day, and wasn’t nearly as good-looking.

Indeed, the new Canon S90 claims its good looks from the Digital Elph lineup; it has a simple and sleek body that keeps a compact form at 3.9 x 2.3 x 1.2 inches. The old S80 measured a less pocketable 4.1 x 2.2 x 1.5 inches.
