Two compact digital cameras received firmware updates from their manufacturers this week. Ricoh issued a few minor fixes for the GR Digital III while Panasonic practically gutted its older LX3 with some changes in speed and additional functions.

Ricoh’s firmware update version 1.21 was announced and is available today by clicking here. The Ricoh GR Digital III firmware update corrects some problems that came out when the camera was introduced last month. The camera had problems with the auto rotate function in the playback mode, the switch between macro and normal focus modes, and the manual focus when the center of the image was enlarged. The firmware update fixes all of these problems as well as a problem that recorded the incorrect focal length in the Exif data when the optional GW-2 conversion lens was used.

The Ricoh GR Digital III is a high-end compact with 10.1 megapixels and a fixed 28mm lens with a wide f/1.9 aperture. The digital camera sells for about $850.

Panasonic’s Lumix DMC-LX3 is quite a bit older than the GR Digital III, but will have a fresh update with its version 2.0 firmware. The upgrade was announced Sept. 28, but has yet to become available, with the company’s web site stating only that it will come “soon.” The LX3 will get a much faster autofocus system, improved white balance performance, and a modified digital red-eye removal function.

The Panansonic LX3 will also receive several new additions: white balance bracketing, a High Dynamic scene mode, and a 1:1 aspect ratio shooting mode. The exposure compensation range has been expanded to +/- 3 from the more common +/- 2 range on the previous version, and the auto exposure bracketing has been expanded as well. The Panasonic LX3 isn’t quite in the same high-end league as the Ricoh GR Digital III, but it still comes with 10.1 megapixels and a 2.5x optical zoom lens with a wide f/2.0 max aperture. The LX3, which features HD movies in addition to its plethora of manual and automated modes, retails for $499.

The LX3’s firmware update can be downloaded from the company web site here when it becomes available.
