Fujifilm introduced an update to one of its most popular long-zoom digital cameras with the announcement of the FinePix S1500. If this new camera’s specs sound familiar, 10 megapixels, a 12x optical zoom lens, and a 2.7-inch LCD screen, it’s because they are exactly the same as the older S1000fd. The new S1500 will begin selling for $249 in March.

Fujifilm claims that the S1000fd was “popular and well-received,” so why change a good thing? The new S1500 has the same 4.1 x 2.9 x 2.7-inch dimensions and SLR-style. It has the same 10 megapixels and 12x optical zoom lens with dual image stabilization. It even has the same 2.7-inch, 230,000-pixel LCD screen. The two cameras share the same face detection, the same array of more than a dozen scene modes, and the same 1.4 fps burst mode.

Besides weighing one tenth of an ounce less, the only difference in the new S1500 is that it includes an improved SR Auto mode (also know as Automatic Scene Recognition). The camera is able to recognize six different scenes automatically and adjust the exposure, white balance, focus, and ISO to create the best image possible. This technology is not altogether new, but is included in a few other recently announced Fujifilm digital cameras.

“Fujifilm’s FinePix S1500fd offers advanced amateur photographers an affordable, SLR-styled digital camera,” said David Troy, Marketing Manager, Consumer Digital Cameras, Electronic Imaging Division, Fujifilm U.S.A., Inc., in a February 17 press release. “Sporting a Fujinon 12x optical zoom for greater range and flexibility and Automatic Scene Recognition, the FinePix S1500 offers its user an efficient, feature-rich digital camera making it easy to capture amazing images.”
