Fujifilm introduced the FinePix F200EXR as the successor to the F100fd on February 4. Both digital cameras have 12 megapixels on a 1/1.6-inch Super CCD, but this latest image sensor comes with updated technology that promises better resolution, wider dynamic range, lower noise and higher sensitivity for “professional photographic results.”

The Fujifilm FinePix F200EXR has a 5x optical zoom lens like its predecessor, but its LCD screen measures larger at 3 inches, as opposed to the F100’s 2.7-inch screen. Both cameras have 15 scene modes and a host of manual controls including ISO sensitivity up to 3200 at full resolution, and up to ISO 12800 at reduced resolution. The new model still has face detection even though it doesn’t have the “fd” suffix like the F100fd, but Fujifilm chose to hype up its newest image sensor technology with the “EXR” suffix.

The Super CCD EXR technology is a triple combination of “‘Fine Capture Technology”’(High Resolution), ‘Pixel Fusion Technology’ (High Sensitivity & Low Noise), and ‘Dual Capture Technology’ (Wide Dynamic Range),” according to the product Web site. This combination of technology also promises an improved Auto mode.

David Troy, Marketing Manager of Fujifilm’s Consumer Digital Camera Division, emphasized the image sensor’s quality, although it does pack quantity with its 12 megapixels.

“There is strong demand in the digital camera market to increase the number of pixels on a sensor, which, all too often, is used as a convenient yardstick for image quality,” Troy said in the February 4 press release. “Consumers have realized there’s more to a good picture than just the number of megapixels, and with our Super CCD EXR sensor we prove that true image quality is about a combination of many factors like tone, hue, color fidelity, dynamic range, sharpness, and resolution – all brought to life vividly in the FinePix F200EXR.”

The F200EXR skips the IrSimple wireless technology that is on the F100 and other Fujifilm digital cameras, but it includes HD output so you can watch slideshows of your images on your HDTV. The Fuji F200EXR includes 48MB of internal memory and also includes a slot that accepts SD and SDHC cards in addition to xD-Picture media.

The Fujifilm F200EXR is on the market now for $399.
