As more and more manufacturers add zoom to their compact cameras, Nikon announced the L110 with its 15x lens and $279 price tag. The company also unveiled the $129 L22 with its 3.6x lens.
The Nikon Coolpix L110 and L22 are in the same “Life” series, but share few characteristics. Both have 12.1 megapixels and a 3-inch LCD, but the L110 has twice the screen resolution with 460,000 pixels. The L110 has a chunkier body with a hand grip and large lens barrel while the L22 is a classic compact digital camera with a simple, boxy body.
The L110 is similar to its predecessor, the L100, in that they have the same body type and 15x lens. The L100 has 10 megapixels and the new L110 has 12.1 megapixels. The new model improves the LCD resolution to 460k from 230k pixels. Other improvements include 720p HD video, a stereo microphone, optical zoom in movie mode, and the addition of electronic image stabilization to the existing sensor-shift system. One area where the older model claims victory is in battery power: the L110 snaps 840 shots with four lithium AA batteries and the older L100 could get 900 shots.
The Nikon Coolpix L22 also increases its resolution from its predecessor, the L20, from 10 to 12.1 megapixels. Both cameras have a 3.6x optical zoom lens with digital image stabilization. Each has a 3-inch, 230k-pixel LCD screen and is powered by two AA batteries. The older model retails for $119 and the new model will cost ten dollars more for those extra two megapixels.
"These new additions to the Coolpix L-series continue the tradition of empowering consumers to enjoy photography with cameras that are easy to use, with features that make taking great photos an enjoyable experience for the whole family," said Bo Kajiwara, director of marketing, Nikon Inc., in the Feb. 2 press release.
