Olympus announced a firmware update that will quicken the auto focus speed of its Digital Pen series of interchangeable lens cameras. The new update also ensures that the E-P1, E-P2, and E-PL1 are compatible with newer Micro Four Thirds lenses.

According to Olympus, the update improves auto focus time by 15 percent when shooting stills. The update also improves auto focus speed when recording HD videos and when using the tracking feature in the continuous auto focus mode.

Olympus recently announced two Micro Four Thirds lenses that are designed “to achieve accurate and silent auto focus while shooting HD videos,” according to the company. The firmware update ensures that the three Pen cameras are compatible with the new lenses. The M. Zuiko Digital ED 9-18mm f/4.0-5.6 will be available next month and the M. Zuiko Digital ED 14-150mm f/4.0-5.6 will go on sale in June.

“This firmware update makes the popular PEN series cameras even more functional for photo enthusiasts and movie-makers alike,” said John Knaur, senior marketing manager for the Pen and E-system models at Olympus Imaging America Inc., in the April 15 press release. “The improved auto focus speed will make it even easier to capture outstanding, high-quality images and HD videos.”

The Olympus E-PL1 and E-P2 gain increased functionality with the new firmware update too. The update will allow recorded images and menus to be displayed on the LCD when the electronic viewfinder is attached to the cameras.

The firmware update will be available beginning April 22 via the company’s Digital Camera Updater software, which can be downloaded free from the company’s web site here.
