Panasonic updated the firmware on two of its Micro Four Thirds DSLR cameras. The 12.1-megapixel G1 and GH1 are getting upgraded autofocus performance and compatibility with a new Leica lens due out next month.

The Panasonic G1’s firmware version 1.4 improves the autofocus system’s performance when shooting low-contrast subjects. It is also optimized for Leica’s 45mm macro lens. The Panasonic GH1’s version 1.2 firmware update includes these improvements and fixes a noise issue it had with the Lumix 20mm f/1.7 lens. That particular lens caused operational noise to be recorded in videos, so the new firmware update reduces that noise but at the expense of speed.

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH1 is capable of recording high definition 1080p videos, but the older G1 does not include any form of movie mode. The $1,499 GH1 and the $799 G1 both have built-in image stabilization, face detection, 3 fps burst modes, and live views on their 3-inch, 460k-pixel LCD screens.

The firmware update was released September 17 and is available on Panasonic’s global web site. Click here for the G1’s update and here for the GH1’s update.
