Pentax announced the beginning of two new product lines with the unveiling of the retro-styled Optio I-10 and the compact H90. Both cameras come with 12.1 megapixels and a wide, 5x optical zoom lens. Pentax also announced the E90, a budget compact model. All three digital cameras will go on sale next month.
The Pentax Optio I-10 borrows its looks from retro film SLRs with its protruding lens and textured leather-like body that comes in black and white. Its 5x optical zoom lens extends from 28-140mm but still remains quite compact as the camera measures 4 x 2.6 x 1.1 inches.
The Pentax Optio H90 has the same resolution and lens as the I-10, but is packaged in a flatter body that takes a more minimalist approach to its appearance. Besides the body style, the biggest difference between the H90 and I-10 is the inclusion of CCD-shift image stabilization on the I-10. For that, the Pentax I-10 costs $299 and the H90 will sell for $179.
Both cameras shoot 720p HD videos and have features like digital filters, photo frames, expanded dynamic range, in-camera panoramas, face detection, blink detection, and smile capture settings. They are also compatible with Eye-Fi wireless media and have upgraded face detection systems that can recognize cat and dog faces as well as up to 32 human faces at a time.
The Pentax Optio E90 will retail for $99 and serves as a budget-friendly option for consumers. It has 10 megapixels, a 3x optical zoom lens, and a 2.7-inch LCD screen. It does not record HD videos like the other new models, but it does have a basic VGA movie mode along with an older version of face detection and a newer smile capture mode.
