Not to be outdone by Hasselblad, Phase One today announced its newest medium format camera. The Phase One 645DF, which is also being sold under the Mamiya brand name, improves on its predecessor with faster flash sync and autofocus speeds and a fresh partnership with optics manufacturer Schneider-Kreuznach.

The Phase One/Mamiya 645DF camera body is being marketed as “the perfect body for the perfect back.” It is the only medium format camera that supports both focal plane and leaf shutters and is compatible with Phase One, Mamiya, and Leaf-branded digital backs, among others. It will begin selling within the next few months for $5,990.

The 645DF makes plenty of improvements over its predecessor, the 645. The camera body gets more tactile buttons and a fully sealed eye-cup that will cut down on ambient light. The guts of the camera get some upgrades too. The 645DF has three new custom shooting modes and a customizable audio focus lock feature. It will also offer an autofocus system that is 5x faster than the 645 and very high flash sync speeds of up to 1/1600th of a second.

“Our patent-pending flash sync breakthrough eases working with wide open apertures and fill-in flash on location,” said Jan H. Christiansen, Phase One’s marketing director, in the Sept. 28 press release. “We already offer the most flexible exposure times ranging from 1/4000 of a second to one full hour. Setting new performance standards is all about expanding creative options for photographers.”

Phase One and Mamiya Digital Imaging combined their efforts to produce the 645DF. They also partnered with Schneider-Kreuznach to offer three new leaf lenses optimized specifically for the new 645DF. They will be available at 55mm, 80mm, and 110mm focal lengths and will all have a wide f/2.8 aperture. They will begin selling in the next few months starting at $2,490.

“Our vision of offering photographers freedom to choose from what is best in photographic equipment is at the heart of our cooperation with Schneider-Kreuznach,” said Henrik Håkonsson, president and CEO of Phase One.
