If you can’t turn on your new Nikon D5000, you are not alone. Nikon announced today that a select few of its freshest DSLRs slipped beyond the quality assurance line. The company is offering free repairs and free shipping to those affected by the problem.

Nikon did not state how many D5000s were affected, but said that the serial numbers of the problematic cameras would be announced on July 23 on their web site. The company will begin repairs next week and will offer fast shipping – two days or less transit time - where possible.

The Nikon D5000 was first announced April 14, 2009. The 12.3-megapixel DSLR offers manual controls typical of a camera in its class, but also offers an HD movie mode – a feature just popping up on newer DSLRs. The Nikon D5000 retails for $729 for the body only.
